Video of HVAC 169 Ice for cooling in HVAC course by Love2HVAC with Ty Branaman channel, video No. 197 free certified online
Can we use Ice to cool? You may have seen one of the many video variations of people making Ice coolers. Links at the bottom for the ones shown in the video.
Dr john Gorrie uses Ice for cooling patients while treating Malaria nd Yellow fever back in the early 1800's. This lead to him patenting the first Ice Machine years before the first air conditioner. Link to his book below.
In a dry climate evaporation is still more effecting in cooling but it wont do any good when camping in a humid climate. This is where one of these devices can come into play if you can keep enough ice with you.
If you look at the effectives of cooling a house with Ice it is a different story.
Cooling with Ice was popular years ago and we still talk about Tons of cooling today.
1 ton of ice is 2000 pounds. It takes 144 btu to melt 1 pound of ice. 144btu X 2000 pounds is 288,000 BTU in 24hrs this is 1 ton of cooling. 288,000/24 hours in a day is 12000 BTU/Hr of cooling capacity.
The average house has a 3 ton system. To cool your home with Ice you would need to have 3 tons of Ice delivered every 24Hrs. That would be expensive.
What if you used your refrigerator freezer? As the ice melts it absorbs heat from the air. Put the water in the freezer and the heat leaves the water to the cooler freezer, to the cooler evaporator coil, to the cooler refrigerant boiling. to the compressor that raises the temperature and pressure to the condensing coil. The heat leaves the warmer condensing coil to the air around it. Where is the refrigerator? yes in the same house your trying to cool, it only heats the house ad the heat of compression and compressor warms the home.
What if you moved the freezer outside?
It is defiantly harder on the freezer but you would also need a freezer large enough and capable of making 3 tons of ice per day.
At that point you can just have a 3 ton air conditioner with a thermostat and automatic comfort and humidity controls.
