Evaporative cooling, the oldest method of cooling.
Originated form the Egyptian times and still has uses today.
As water evaporates it changes state from a Liquid to a vapor absorbing over 1000 BTU of heat energy. It takes the heat from the air drooping the sensible heat of the air. This sensible cools the air temperature but the heat is still there, just hidden in the latent form of Humidity, water vapor.
For these systems to work correctly
1 must be in a dry climate, the more moisture the less evaporation, the less the cooling. once your over 60% RH in the home your comfort level and the health of the structure drops.
2 Must be installed outside, bringing outside air in and have windows open to exhaust the moist air back out
3 Be serviced and maintained. the water needs to be treated to prevent bacterial and other growth and treated to reduce the calcium and other hard water minerals that build up.
The little portable cooling units are also evaporative cooling, much make more work for the AC. However camping in a dry climate they can be beneficial.
