LESSON NOTES
Organizations cannot develop leaders. Nor can trainers, coaches, or leadership guides. They can just make available the opportunities, resources, support, and guidance that will allow a leader to develop themselves. There are four main ways they can do this.
1. Acquiring Knowledge
2. Coaching and Mentoring
(see the other videos in this section - links above)
3. Practicing Leadership
4. Getting Feedback
A Leadership Development Program outline
1. Process design
2. Get Institutional support
3. Candidate Selection
4. Formal Training
5. Career Development Opportunities
Watching this video is worth 3 Management Courses CPD Points.

RECOMMENDED EXERCISES
Option A
Are you looking for your own leadership development?
1. Assess what opportunities you have, within the four main ways to develop your own leadership. From your consideration, set out a plan for how you will capitalize on each, with times when you will be able to review your progress, and revise your plan. (4 MC CPD Points)
2. You may need to design your own program. If you do, build one by adapting the five-step program outline in the video, to meet your own needs and fit your own constraints. (4 MC CPD Points)
Option B
Are you looking for ways to support leadership development for someone else?
1. Thinking about the four main ways to develop your own leadership, what are the priorities for this person in the coming period (typically 3-12 months)? From your consideration, set out a plan for how you will deliver on each, with times when you will be able to review their progress, and revise your plan. (4 MC CPD Points)
2. Now design a program by adapting the five-step program outline in the video, to meet their needs, use the resources available, and fit your organizational constraints. (4 MC CPD Points)
RECOMMENDED READING
There are a vast number of Leadership books - perhaps more than on any other management-related topic. And there is also a huge range represented in different lists of the best. This no-doubt reflects the different contexts for leadership.
So, any recommended reading list of leadership books must be particularly subjective. I have chosen those that made me think, and which are of particular value to managerial leaders: not sportspeople, military leaders, or CEOs. In no particular order:
